O Maidens In Your
Savage Season is a brutally funny story that makes me incredibly grateful that
I am asexual. Holy cow. If this is the kind of crap teens go through
as they start to learn about and come to terms with sexuality, I would like to
retroactively forgive of my peers for some of their erratic behavior in high
school. I mean, they clearly had a lot
of different things on their minds.
Without all this crap distracting me, observing it all as an embedded
anthropologist, I think my life was much calmer and likely less fraught. (And it was fraught enough at that age.)
Stumbling from one
painfully funny situation to another horribly awkward situation, from
exaggerating for laughs to exaggerating for tears, this is a hormone-fueled
roller coaster accident that is hard to look away from. Starring a cast of bright, well-read teens
who are very different from each other (with the possible current exception of
the two who think that there is nothing outstanding about them), O Maidens
looks at sexual awakening through the lenses of literature and varied personal
experience.
For me, I think the
snort giggle highlight was when one of the girls is on the train reading a book
about how to be an understanding mother to a teenage boy after she accidentally
walks in on her childhood best friend enjoying some porn in a participatory
fashion. Trying to come up with a less
in-your-face euphamism for sex is painfully hilarious, too.
It's clearly not for
everyone, but oh, if it's for you, you will be laughing and embarrassed and
also maybe glad if you are not there anymore.
Or very glad you never were.
